We understand that Year 1 is a big step from EYFS so we try and ensure the transition is as smooth as possible.
We expect Year 1 to have lots of fun!
We expect Year 1 to respect others and be kind to their peers.
We expect Year 1 to have a positive attitude to their learning and support those around them.
We expect children to become more independent as the year progresses by…
Sometimes working without an adult.
Getting equipment for themselves.
Get dressed by themselves, toilet themselves and do up their coat.
Term 1 - our learning will be based around the story Stick Man where we will explore the weather and seasonal changes.
Term 2 - our learning will be based on The Jungle Book where we will look closely at animals and their habitats.
Term 3 - we will learn about The Great Fire of London.
Please see Year 1 Newsletter and Topic Webs each term to find out in more depth what the children will be learning in each area of the curriculum.
Year 1 will have 2 sessions of PE each week. This will take place on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. Please ensure children have their PE kits in school every day, both an indoor and outdoor set, and all uniform is clearly named.
Year 1 will be going on trips to Waitrose, the Literature Festival and the Science Festival. They will also have topic related trips throughout the year. Letters will be sent home nearer the time to inform you of these trips.
Will my child have any formal tests in Year 1?
The children will have Phonics Screening Test which will take place in June 2018.
When do reading records need to be handed to the teacher?
Reading books need to be changed daily by the children. Please ensure reading records have been written in every night. These will be checked throughout the week so children must have them at school every day. Children are also expected to read every night at home. Please write in your child’s reading record about what they have read.
Do children need to bring a water bottle into school?
Children should have a named water bottle in school every day.
What happens if my child looses an item of clothing?
If your child's clothes are clearly labelled they will make their way back to the class. Unnamed items will be taken to lost property which can be accessed through the school office.
Can my child bring toys in to school?
Please can we ask that toys remain at home and are not brought into school so that they are not lost. We will be having a 'Special Sharing' session each week where all children will have the opportunity to share their favourite toys and special items from home. When it is your child's turn we will send a box home for your child to fill. We will inform you when we are sending the ‘All About Me Box’ home with your child.
