Y3 Preparation & Transition


What do we hope children can do as learners before Year 3?

We acknowledge that Year 3 is big step for some children.

  • Be curious- formulate own questions to classmates and teachers

  • Understand the importance of taking turns and sharing

  • Find solutions when conflicts arise

  • Change reading book independently

  • Change independently for PE, with the exception of top button and tie

  • Write first name and surname correctly

  • Stick sheets into their book neatly

  • Begin to use DUMTUMS – Write own date and WALT in cursive script

  • Become increasingly independent and wish to become more involved with school, hobbies, sporting activities and friendships

  • Have well-developed coordination and be keen to show off physical abilities

  • Be able to take turns and play cooperatively

  • Be keen to form strong bonds with others and be supportive of classmates

  • Possibly begin to take life more seriously and may begin to worry more

Y3 Curriculum


What will Year 3 be learning this year?

We will cover 3 main units this year:

  • Term 1 & 2 - Digging up the past & Stone Age.
  • Term 3 & 4 -  Down on the Farm & Looking at different farms across the UK, with a food focus.
  • Term 5 & 6 - "We'll meet again" & WW2 Evacuation



Which days will Year 3 have PE?

Year 3 will have PE on a Wednesday, Thursday and/or Friday every week. Please make sure all children have all of the correct PE kit with them on these days – indoor and outdoor kits.


When do Year 3′s reading records have to be handed in to the teacher?

In year 3, the children are expected to change their books themselves and this can happen every day (or as needed). Some children will be daily readers with an adults, others will be frequent readers so read with up to three times a week. Reading records should be handed in on a Thursday, but every day if possible so that we are able to read with your child.
